Monday Mom Confessions – The Dirty Truth

30 Mar

“It’s impossible to do everything right all the time.  Admitting that is freeing – and it’s also encouraging to other moms in the midst of intense seasons.”

~ Kristina Slaney

How many times have you heard the phrase “wash your hands” in your life?

Me too.

I wash my own hands all the time and almost every night after dinner, you know what I think?

“I didn’t wash my son’s hands before dinner!!”

Best part? He uses a fork when he wants to, but if he’s super hungry, he eats with his hands. Yes, the same hands the played on the floor, were at daycare all day, and the same hands that pet not one, but our two dogs… All those germs… Right into his mouth.

I’ve even splurged and purchased soap just for him (Kandoo’s foam soap) and I still forget sometimes!

To be fair to myself – and so you don’t call the cops on me – it’s not a nightly thing, just a few days a week. Cuz that makes it better right?

I am the worst mother of all time.

DISCLAIMER: I started planning/writing this post a week ago and somehow, I’ve remembered to wash his hands every night before dinner since. #accountabilityworks

What’s your mom confession? Post in the comments or link up from your blog! I’d love to share stories, cuz mama, the struggle is real.

Monday Mom Confessions

23 Mar

“It’s impossible to do everything right all the time.  Admitting that is freeing – and it’s also encouraging to other moms in the midst of intense seasons.”

~ Kristina Slaney

Every Monday, my friend Kristina posts her Monday Mom Confessions. I love reading her self-proclaimed confessions and have decided to link up with her and start posting them myself!

Since this is my first MMC, I’m starting light…

If you have a toddler, you’ve likely started waiting to stuff your face full of dessert until after bedtime, lest the smallest bite of something sugary keep your little monster up way past your “you time” at the end of the day. Missing my “me time” or “husband time” (on the few nights a week he’s home) makes me cranky, and with a budding baby in my belly, it’s more necessary that ever to get my perfect (and totally un-sleep trained) boy down for the night. Come on, I mean, it already takes a solid hour+ to get him to sleep, so whatever is left of the night is all mine (screw laundry). Sugar be damned.

Last night, we got some great news. Our home that we’ve been living in (renting) for several years was recently sold. Our new landlords bought the duplex under the agreement that they would be living in one of the two units… which are both currently occupied. We live in a beautiful, old building from the 1920’s that has two identical units. One of top of the other. We used to live upstairs, and now we live downstairs. Needless to say, we love our building, we love our neighborhood, we love our neighbors and we love living in the middle of the city, where everything we need is incredibly close by. People say LA has the worst traffic, but they just live in the wrong place. 🙂 Anyway, for the last 2 months, we’ve been waiting for the new owners to let us know which one of the two units they planned on moving into. We knew that LA’s rent control laws protected us (we’ve lived there longer than our upstairs neighbors), but that doesn’t mean that the new owners would follow the rules. We were just nervous. The idea of being uprooted just a few months before the new baby comes, and in the middle of finals for my husband, was terrifying.

On to the good news – Sunday night, the new owners came over to “discuss their plans for the house” and the end result is that we get to stay!!!!

How does this relate to my MMC??? Well, in of the excitement that the new owners brought with them, we needed cake. Thankfully, we live within walking distance to the BEST bakery in LA (in my opinion), Sweet Lady Jane. Onward ho! We marched ourselves straight to SLJ for some cake… and 7:00PM on a Sunday night. Shoot.

Remy can’t eat cake at 7:00PM or he will NEVER SLEEP AGAIN!!! Our evening of watching House of Cards will be damaged and a sour bedtime on a Sunday night, just leads to a rough(er) Monday morning. Waaaaaaaahhhh.

We walked back home with our cake in a togo box, and my excited little man cried when he only got ONE bite (mostly blueberry) of his triple berry shortcake, before bed.

But here’s the best thing – CAKE MAKES A GREAT BREAKFAST. Especially when it’s loaded with fruit (triple berry) and milk (lots and lots of whip cream frosting). Cake is a grain, right? We’re talking BALANCE.

Saving a piece for the little guy, while trying not to smear the goodness all over my face, took some serious self-control, but by some magical mystery, he was asleep by 8:30, woke up at 6:45 and didn’t get out of bed until 7:30 this morning. By 7:45, my little darling was hands deep in cake. For breakfast. He actually woke up saying “Memy’s cake! Memy’s cake time! Wake up! Cake time!”

Cake for Breakfast!

Cake for Breakfast!

The ultimate confession? He’s at daycare today. If he goes bonkers on a sugar high… He’s on someone else’s watch.

Lesson learned? Save dessert for breakfast. It won’t challenge bedtimes, and he’ll have plenty of time to burn off the sugar rush by nap time. 🙂

The Big Announcement

12 Mar

It’s been a while and I must say, I’ve been absent for a reason.

See, I’m a “heart on my sleeve” kind of person, and when there’s a secret to be kept, I tend to disappear. That doesn’t mean that I’ve stopped writing though, I’ve just been saving everything to my drafts folder. 🙂 So be prepared for an onslaught of updates as I start publishing everything that was missed in the next week! On to the big news…

Remy's Getting a BROTHER!

Remy’s Getting a BROTHER!

Introducing, baby #2!!!

After my last miscarriage, I wanted to err on the side of caution and get through the first trimester before announcing anything about our new little guy. Life’s become so crazy, that I’m actually half way through the 2nd trimester now, and am finally feeling better and feeling the little man move around in my belly makes me feel great. We just had our 20w appointment yesterday and the little champion is perfect. He’s measuring at 10″ already and you can already see his eyelashes, in all their in-utero glory.

Now that it’s out there, I can start posting all of those horrible first trimester posts, and everything else I’ve been wanting to share about life while expecting my new little boy, and simultaneously being thoroughly in love with my now TWO YEAR OLD boy.

Oh yeah, and I started this to anonymously post woes about 1st tri, while it was happening. 🙂 I only got a few weeks in, because morning sickness/life was just too much at the time, but for all of you who can totally relate…

The Thanksgiving Miracle

27 Nov

IMG_9612.JPGEveryone knows that the one thing my super amazing 21 month old doesn’t do well, is sleep.

We’ve had nannies quit, give up, and cry because they couldn’t get him to nap. I’ve had the “I’m a terrible mom” guilt countless times, because I can’t get him to nap. We’ve sleep trained for months on end. It’s been a process.

The person who seems to get him to sleep the best, is my father in law, and well, he lives 300 miles away in Nevada, sooooo….

I nap with him.

I’ve always justified this because I only have a few days a week with him, when we’re both home at nap time, sometimes, only 1. Who doesn’t love a forced nap on the weekends?

Well, he has been napping at daycare for almost 6 months and I’ve doubted them every time they say “he napped great!” Of course they’re lying…. Or talking about someone else’s kid. Cuz on the weekends, when we do get to cuddle/nap, it’s rarely a “good” nap, but it’s our thing and hey, I’m down with naps.

Cut to this week.

I’ve been taking a class on Sunday afternoons that prohibits me from napping. As much as I’m learning in the class, I stress out about “someone’s” sleep the whole first half of it. I can’t be the one to put him down or he cries for “boobboobs” and “mamas shroom” or “hug you”, so I’ve finally figured out that if daddy does it, eventually it works out. For the first 5 weeks, Grant was able to stay home from school long enough to put him down, then leave, then a babysitter/friend/sister would show up to watch him, and I’d leave.

Last Sunday, Grant had to leave early because of finals/studying. After 30 minutes, I was finally able to get him down for a nap, then I left the house.

Yesterday I had a half -day at work, so because last Sunday was a fluke (had to have been, right?), I planned on cooking all of my items for Thanksgiving dinner while he was “napping great” at school, on Wednesday.

Tuesday night was a mess. I’m sure I can thank teething for our lack of sleep this week, because every once in a while, night time sleeping is bad, but this week, it was several nights in a row. When I dropped him off in the morning, a newer teacher received him from me. I told her that he’d been up all night (from 11:45pm-4:00am… I’m not exaggerating!! Terrible sleeper!!), and she said “well, he’s our best napper, so I’m sure he’ll make up for it then!”

What?!

She knows that REMY is my kid, right? Not one of the other kids? She’s talking about the boy I just handed to her, right?

According to her, “I just lay him down, put a blanket on him and he’s out like a light!”

Dear all the nannies and baby sitters of Remy naps past. THANK YOU!!! Your sweat and tears have paid off and my kid’s the best napper at school!!

Well, I continued on my way of making all my Thanksgiving Day fixings yesterday (just in case I had to join him on the nap wagon).

IMG_9585.JPGSomehow, I managed to get my son to sleep in as little as 10 minutes today. I’m still in shock.

It’s Thanksgiving Day and my work is done, my kitchen is clean, my food is made, I’ve showered (hooray!) and put makeup on (double hooray!) and will actually be ready to leave my house on time for my sister’s, provided that he wakes up on time.

Clearly, I’ve also had time to blog… How is this even real life?! This nap thing is genius!!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!! It’s a miracle!!!

City Living, Fur Babies, Time Changes and Motherhood

3 Nov

IMG_9300.JPGThese things are all good on their own, but combined, they sort of blow.

1. CITY LIVING:
Our backyard isn’t connected to our house. It’s a side yard with an open driveway and a gate blocking the garages from the yard. Confusing. Why is this a big deal? It’s a big deal because I can’t open a door to let my

2. FUR BABIES
out to go potty after being cooped up in the house all day. My options are, 1. Wear my 28lb toddler in a backward-facing Ergo, and walk the naughty fur babies to get them to “go” (which pretty much makes me look/feel like a monkey, cuz they’re horrible to control) or 2. Take them in the yard and let them go there. This has been our ideal situation all summer, since Remy started walking, because he loves playing outside on the concrete driveway or in the yard, but now???? Now????

3. TIME CHANGE!!!
This is not a fun time of year anymore!!! The baby can’t play outside while the pups do their business because it’s dark so early and I can’t see the pups and the baby in the yard (which has no light). “Fall back” has been a lifelong favorite. Being granted an extra hour of sleep has always been my heaven! Cooler air in the days and chilly nights means getting to snuggle up on the couch sooner! Darkness early has always meant sweaters were needed! Well, with

4. MOTHERHOOD
This is no longer possible!!! I’m up at 4, instead of 5, and am literally going insane. Tonight, my dogs won’t poop, my baby wouldn’t sleep, we were up before 5:00am, I worked all day, and now I’m tired. I just want the kitchen to be clean, tomorrow’s dinner prepped, the laundry folded, my baby to wake up at 7, not 4 or 5, the sun to stay in the sky when I get back from work, and my dogs to either learn how to be more mannerly on-leash, or poop in the yard, on command (should that really be so hard??).

End rant.

Please baby; stay asleep tonight. All night.

Please puppies; poop on command. I beg you.

Please sunshine; don’t got to sleep so early.

Please moon; stay put just a little longer in the morning.
